Main Control Room of Unit 2 at CGN’s Taipingling Nuclear Power Plant in Guangdong

A ceremony marking the official commissioning of Unit 2 and the full completion of Phase I at CGN’s Taipingling Nuclear Power Plant in Guangdong was held on the morning of August 3. Among those in attendance were Chen Yuhang, Deputy Secretary of the Municipal Party Committee and Mayor of Huizhou; Cai Zhen, Vice President of China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN); Li Bingsheng, Member of the Standing Committee of the Municipal Party Committee and Party Secretary of Huidong County; Zhang Guoqiang, Chairman of CGN Huizhou Nuclear Power Co., Ltd.; Bi Fengchuan, General Manager of CGN Huizhou Nuclear Power Co., Ltd.; Ning Xiaoping, Chairman of CGN Engineering Co., Ltd.; and Dan Jun, Vice President of Dongfang Electric Corporation Limited.

In his address, Chen Yuhang stated that the Taipingling nuclear power project is a key initiative in Huizhou’s efforts to implement the national “dual carbon” strategy and the new energy security strategy. Huizhou is currently advancing the development and construction of the Renping Peninsula to high standards and at a high level, and CGN’s nuclear energy operations in Huizhou have entered a phase of rapid growth. Huizhou Municipal Party Committee and the Municipal Government will continue to provide comprehensive support and an optimal environment for the project, giving full backing to CGN’s various undertakings in the city. He expressed the hope that CGN will steadily ensure stable and full-capacity operation of Phase I, expedite the commissioning of Phase II, and move forward with the commencement of Phase III at the earliest opportunity. He also called for deeper collaboration to explore the direct supply of nuclear power for AI computing infrastructure, helping Huizhou build itself into a national hub for green computing power.

In his address, Cai Zhen pointed out that the successful commissioning of Unit 2 marks the full completion of Phase I of the first Hualong One nuclear power project in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. CGN will continue to uphold nuclear safety as its top priority, systematically review and refine its experience in the batch construction of Hualong One unit and advance subsequent phases to the highest standards. The company is committed to building a flagship showcase for its Hualong One technology, actively exploring pathways for nuclear-powered AI computing infrastructure, and fulfilling its role as a central state-owned enterprise in driving regional economic development.

Officials from the South China Office of Nuclear and Radiation Safety Inspection under the Ministry of Ecology and Environment were also present at the ceremony.

The Taipingling nuclear power project is planned to feature six Hualong One units, with total investment estimated at RMB 120 billion. With both units of Phase I fully operational, the plant will deliver over 18 billion kilowatt-hours of clean electricity annually to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, cutting carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 16.63 million tonnes per year.
